V. MANUFACTURABILITY, TEST, RELIABILITY OrCAD X PCB Layout DRC navigation 35. Performing Design Rule Checks (DRC) and Electrical Rule Checks (ERC) Iteratively Design Rule Checks (DRC) and Electrical Rule Checks (ERC) are your primary defense against manufacturing defects, assembly problems, and electrical failures. Waiting to run these checks until the very end of a project often results in an overwhelming number of violations, many of which may be complex to fix after placement and routing are complete. Iterative checking (running DRC/ERC throughout the design process) catches mistakes early, prevents errors from compounding, and helps ensure a first-pass success in fabrication and bring-up. When And Where To Apply Run DRC and ERC throughout the design flow: after initial schematic capture, before and after component placement, during and after routing, and before every design milestone or file export. Make it a standard part of your workflow, not just a final sign-off step.
