33. Optimizing Decoupling and Bulk Capacitor Placement Decoupling capacitors stabilize supply voltages, absorb transient currents, and prevent noise from propagating between power and ground planes. Bulk capacitors provide energy storage to handle low- frequency dips and inrushes, while high- frequency ceramics suppress spikes and noise right at the IC pins. Incorrect value selection, poor placement, or excessive trace length can undermine power integrity, lead to voltage droops, high EMI, logic errors, or even startup failures. When And Where To Apply Decoupling and bulk capacitors should be carefully placed for every power rail, at each IC, and along power distribution paths - especially for high-speed digital ICs (MCUs, FPGAs, DDR, ASICs), sensitive analog/RF blocks, and power management circuits.
