“Optimize Your Supply Chain Through Effective BOM Management” Webinar Recap

Key Takeaways

  • Shortages or disruptions of PCB components can affect the supply chain and lead to production delays and increased design and production costs.

  • Cadence developed OrCAD X Live BOM to move away from the manual approach to Bill of Materials and gain visibility into any component supply chain issues.

  • To do this, Cadence has partnered with Sourceability to view supply chain data, compare prices, check availability and lead times, and view supplier ratings.

Shortages or disruptions of PCB components can affect the supply chain and lead to production delays and increased design and production costs. These shortages or disruptions occur for various reasons, including technological shifts, changing environmental regulations, trade wars, geopolitical tensions, and other unpredictable events. Cadence developed OrCAD X Live BOM to move away from the manual approach to Bill of Materials (BOM) and gain visibility into any component supply chain issues.

Benefits of OrCAD X Live BOM

OrCAD X Live BOM is integrated into the OrCAD X Capture CIS interface and “provides you with real-time access to your design BOM and supply chain information,” explained Nitin Thapliyal, principal product engineer at Cadence during the CadenceTECHTALK: Optimize Your Supply Chain Through Effective BOM Management webinar.

“Within the interface, you will get complete access to part data, like technical specifications, data sheets, material compliance, and lifecycle status. And with the help of Sourceability’s Datalynq and Sourcengine, you can view supply chain data, compare prices, check availability and lead times, and view supplier ratings,” Thapliyal added.

Yashar Shahabi, senior VP of strategic partnerships of Sourceability, explained that Datalynq is his company’s market intelligence tool and Sourcengine is its e-commerce platform. “Our Datalynq market intelligence solution came about because of the supply chain challenges that exist, especially in the last decade or so, within the electronic components industry. Between design procurement and the supply chain, there are continuous challenges,” Shahabi explained. He added that this prompted Sourceability to work with Cadence to provide data about the current status of components and market intelligence using predictive analytics.

Thapliyal explained that OrCAD X Live BOM extracts the data from the design, dynamically fetches supply chain information from Sourcengine and Datalynq via the OrCAD X Cloud, and populates this information in the user interface.

Live BOM displays the overall health of the BOM as a grade, which considers the environmental risk, lifecycle, multi-source availability, inventory risk status, unmatched components present in the design, and ROHS compliance of all the components, Thapliyal concluded.
