What’s New in OrCAD X 24.1 FAQ

Here are some comprehensive answers to all the questions that were asked in our recent webinar.

OrCAD X Capture | Live BOM | OrCAD X Presto PCB Editor | Licensing | General

OrCAD X Capture

In a multi-monitor setup, how do I get OrCAD X Capture to remember the floating window location for the “project name.opj” window from the previous session? When opening a project, this window is always docked to the main window.

The floating project window will always return to the default monitor and position. An enhancement has been filed to have panels retain the saved state when the application is closed.

What is the local workspace limited to, or what features does it not have that cloud workspaces does?

Using your local workspace is just like using up regular disk space, it won’t offer any data management, collaboration, version/revision control, etc.

Due to company policy, does the local workspace option have the same features as the cloud? Or is there an option for self-server?

No, the local workspace does not have the same features as available in the cloud and there is no option for a self-server.

Does the cloud file manager have revision control, or do you have to save each revision under a different project file?

The File Manager is the interface that allows you to drive the cloud data management, so yes, version control is included and handled.

Does OrCAD X Capture require the use of cloud workspaces, or can I continue to use a workspace local to my company?

You can continue to use a workspace local to your set up.

Can we upload our designs and files to our local cloud?

OrCAD X Cloud currently only supports Cadence cloud and not company personal cloud locations.

Is there any integration with OrCAD X CIP (Component Information Portal)?

CIP is already integrated with OrCAD X Capture and can be purchased as an additional option.

How do I log out of OrCAD X OnCloud?

Currently there is not an option to sign out of OrCAD X Cloud. When a user is first prompted to log into OrCAD X Cloud they can choose to click the Cancel Button, which skips the log in process.

Live BOM

Is Live BOM more useful than the CIS part manager?

Live BOM and the CIS part manager serve two different purposes - CIS allows you to specify and manage all your part meta data in a component database, like SQL, and apply the part data upon selection and application of the schematic symbol to the design. Whereas Live BOM provides the ability to validate the CIS/component metadata against the latest inventory, market availability, pricing, and lead time trends supplied by Sourcengine.

Does the supply chain information shown require a Silicon Expert license, or what licensing is required to have this capability?

There is no extra licensing required. Live BOM gets its supply chain information from Sourcengine and Datalynq, which are integrated within Live BOM.

Where does the supply chain data come from, such as part availability, market info, etc. and how reliable is it?

Cadence is partnered with Sourcengine and Datalynq, where they have access to over 3700 distributors and manufacturers across over 1 billion parts, this is where the data is sourced from and available within Live BOM.

Does Live BOM work with Capture CIS?

Yes, Capture CIS data can be verified through Live BOM, but you cannot populate your CIS database using Live BOM information yet, this functionality is coming in the future.

Can the Live BOM supply chain information be combined with a corporate CIS component parts database? What information is then needed in the database, and how does it need to be configured?

Yes, it can be. All you need is the Manufacturer and Manufacturer Part Number from the corporate database. Configure these properties to be available on schematic instance and Live BOM will fetch the supply chain details.

Does the use of Live BOM depend on having a currently active support contract?

Yes, Live BOM requires an active OrCAD X OnCloud subscription.

Can Live BOM interface with Silicon Expert?

Not at this time, but there is a separate OrCAD X interface into Silcon Expert provided by our channel partner, EMA. More information can be found at the following link: Silicon Expert Partner

OrCAD X Presto PCB Editor

When will the new constraints panel be released?

The new constraints panel in OrCAD X Presto PCB Editor will be released in 24.1 ISR1 next month (November 2024).

Does the docked Constraint panel automatically populate with the rules set in the traditional Constraint Manager (and vice versa)?

Yes, all supported constraint sets appear in the docked panel. All advanced constraints may not be supported yet.

Is the footprint generator available in the current 24.1 release, or is it upcoming in the next ISR?

The footprint generator is available in the current 24.1 release.

Will these move options be available in the Presto Footprint Editor as well?

Yes, these new move options are available in the Presto Footprint Editor as well.

Can I place the components by disabling the grids?

Yes, you can place components with the grid feature on or off.

Does the impedance analysis consider the stackup materials?

Yes, the impedance analysis uses the materials, layer thickness, and dielectric constraints specified in the cross-section editor.

Is the footprint generator basically Allegro Library Creator that is now integrated into OrCAD X 24.1?

The footprint generator is powered by the same technology used in Allegro Library Creator.

Can the 3D STEP Model also be generated with the footprint wizard?

The footprint wizard does not create a STEP model but does create a 3D extrusion representation of the part.

Do delays take into account via delays?

Yes, delay takes into account the total signal length, including via length.

How do you unroute the entire board? Vias and Traces?

There is not an unroute all command – with a design fully in view, users can choose the Delete function, and then in the Find filter select only Clines. Cline Segs and Vias and window the entire design. Everything deleted will return to nets.

In Europe (or at least Sweden), I always specify a fixed oversize of solder masks for pads. Does the footprint wizard have a setting for this when creating footprints from a template?

The mask size is a fixed parameter and varies based on the selection of IPC A, B, or C.

Within the constraint manager is it possible to add or modify the gates and pins swappability without coming from a schematic, but coming from a netlist?

Pinswap definition is stored in the device file. To learn more you can login into Cadence Online support and search for the following article: Allegro Pin Swap Setup Leveraging Device Files.

How easy is it to modify a drawn shape? Have those displayed X,Y location been added to that workflow as well?

Currently the new move command with the X,Y location only works on component move. There are plans to add it to creating and editing any drawn shape.

Does the new display mode of assigned layer colors in shadow mode also work on the PCB viewer tool?

Shadow mode is not yet supported in the PCB viewer but will be in a future release.

Licensing

Does the in-design analysis feature still require a separate Sigrity X install to activate, or is it included in the OrCAD X installer now?

To be able to use the in-design analysis feature in OrCAD X, you are still required to install Sigrity X, it is a separate install.

What license is required to run OrCAD X Presto?

All three tiers of OrCAD X licenses – Standard, Professional and Professional Plus contain the Presto PCB Editor application.

Is there a license that can run both OrCAD X Presto and Allegro X?

Currently you would need two separate licenses, as Presto is not yet available in Allegro X, however this will change in the 25.1 release (October 2025).

I have a license of OrCAD Professional and the Presto PCB Editor is not available to me.

To access the Presto PCB Editor, you need an OrCAD X Professional license, not an OrCAD Professional. The OrCAD X platform is available in release 23.1 and higher.

Which of the features are not available with a standard license? For example, are some of the constraints limited? Is the footprint generator available with a standard license?

The footprint generator is only available in OrCAD X Professional and higher. Check with your local Cadence Channel Partner for a breakdown of what features are available in Standard versus Professional.

How do I switch between OrCAD Professional to OrCAD X Professional?

These are two different licenses that give you access to specific tools; you can contact your local Cadence Channel Partner if you’re looking to upgrade to the X platform.

Is there then an Allegro X license that also supports running OrCAD X Presto PCB Editor? Or would we need both an Allegro X and an OrCAD X license?

Unfortunately, Presto is not yet available in Allegro X but is scheduled to be introduced in the Allegro X 25.1 release (October 2025). So, if you currently want to access OrCAD X Presto PCB Editor for your layout needs, you will need an OrCAD X license.

What OrCAD X license is required for Live BOM? Currently this feature is disabled for us.

Live BOM is only included in the OrCAD X Professional license.

I have one seat of EE Designer Plus. Is a new license file needed for each version 22.1, 23.1, etc?

Yes, the recommended upgrade would be OrCAD X Designer Plus.

Can Live BOM be used with an Allegro X Design Entry CIS license?

Yes, Allegro X Design Entry CIS includes Live BOM.

I have 1 license for OrCAD X Professional. Can I split the use of the schematic to one user and PCB layout to another user at the same time?

Unfortunately not, the single license reflects the package, either standard or professional, so when either schematic or PCB editor is invoked the package license is consumed.

General

When updating the CIS part manager on selected parts in Capture 17.4, we get a major memory leak on capture.exe, and PC will hang. Around 50MB memory increase per part updated. Is this fixed now?

Yes, it should be as 17.4 is a very old (~5 Yr+) release. There are several enhancements and fixes that are available in the latest 24.1 release.

What application of OrCAD X PCB tools is included in PCB Designer Professional?

OrCAD X Professional includes both PCB Editor and the new Presto PCB layout editor.

Is EE Designer Plus part of the OrCAD X family?

Yes, EE Designer Plus is functionally the equivalent of OrCAD X Designer Plus.

Do any of the existing and maintained PCB Designer Professional licenses include any of these new OrCAD X features? Or would a new license need to be purchased?

For every major (23.1, 24.1, etc...) new release a new license is required. If you’re on maintenance the new license is issued to you at no cost.

I’m currently on maintenance, but I don’t have access to the workspace or Live BOM.

Live BOM and workspaces were available, starting with the 23.1 OrCAD X release. Please contact your local sales rep, and they will be able to provide you with the license and links to the latest download and installer.

In the 24.1 version, I can't find projmgr or DE-HDL (Concept). Where are they located?

Projmgr and Concept HDL are still included in the installation. Please open a support ticket, and an Application Engineer should be able to assist you in finding them. They should be in the tools/bin folder. However, please note that the end of life of DE-HDL has been announced and 24.1 is the last release it will appear in. DE-HDL, aka Concept, has been replaced by a new solution called System Capture. System Capture fully supports the import of DE-HDL designs and leverages the existing libraries.

Does OrCAD X Professional 24.1 have PSpice simulation capabilities?

Yes, OrCAD X Professional supports basic PSpice capabilities.

When it comes to MCADX, do we still need to utilize Circuitworks for the 24.1 release?

Yes, MCADX is our interface within Cadence, and Circuitworks is Dassault Systèmes SOLIDWORKS exchange interface.

Why isn't it possible to open OrCAD X Presto PCB Editor from the (higher) Allegro X licenses?

Presto PCB Editor is not yet available in Allegro X - that will change in 25.1 (October 2025).

In OrCAD X/Allegro X, what do you recommend the best way to interface with Creo for bidirectional data exchange?

OrCAD X has a very good integration into Creo. There is nothing special that needs to be done other than the exchange of IDX, which maintains the change and object log.

What’s changed from Cadence Allegro 14.x, is it just a graphical interface?

The current version of Allegro X is 24.1, so you are referring to a really old version. A lot has changed between version 14 and 24.1, in both OrCAD X and Allegro X, not just the graphical interface, but features, functionality, performance and new applications.

I have both Allegro and OrCAD PCB. If I switch to OrCAD X, do I also need Allegro X?

That depends on your design requirements and software capabilities needed. Allegro X is our enterprise solution and has way more features and functionalities that aren’t available in OrCAD X.

When I launch OrCAD X Presto, the icon on my PC says Cadence Allegro Unison. Why is that the case?

Unison is the executable name, which is why you are seeing it. Presto PCB is currently available in OrCAD X. In 25.1 (October 2025), Presto will be introduced in Allegro X and will exist in a unified cockpit within the System Capture application.

Is OrCAD X always synonymous with Allegro X? Some applications say Allegro X and some say OrCAD X.

OrCAD X and Allegro X are our two product lines that contain a comprehensive PCB Design suite, and depending upon the license you purchase, the applications available to you will either be OrCAD X or Allegro X-based applications, and the features and functionality sets will be different.

Do OrCAD X Professional features exist in Allegro X?

Yes, Allegro X is our enterprise solution, so it contains many more features than OrCAD X.

Will a PDN analyzer be included in the future?

It is currently under consideration; however, you can currently purchase Sigirty X if you’re interested in DC analysis.

When you translate a PCB layout from PADS, why are the gates and pin swappability lost? For example, when it creates the device file for each part type, it creates a simple gate without swappability.

We recommend filing a support case. If you provide us with the design, we can help determine what the issue is.

Can you create a form to manipulate the device’s file to add and or modify the swappability of gates and pins?

Yes, OrCAD X Capture supports TCL scripting and the PCB Editor supports SKILL which allows you to easily build forms, add automation, or manipulate object data in neither environment.

How do you import and export 3D STEP information to an application like SOLIDWORKS?

OrCAD X contains a robust MCAD exchange interface, allowing you to bidirectionally transfer the PCB information to and from Solidworks. If you’re simply trying to export the STEP of the PCB, you can open up the 3D view from within Presto and select the menu option to Export STEP.

When will OrCAD X be available under Linux. Where are the instructions to install OrCAD X under Redhat 9.4?

Unfortunately, OrCAD X does not support Linux.

Is there a separate Specctra application shortcut?

You can create a windows shortcut to the Specctra executable - C:\Cadence\SPB_24.1\tools\bin\spectra.exe

When will it be possible to download 24.1 from the download manager?

Version 24.1 was released on September 20, 2024 and available on the same day within the Download Manager.
